ENGLISH: HOW TO WRITE A THESIS STATEMENT
What is a thesis statement?A thesis statement sums up the subject of an essay. It can be an arguement, opinion, or analysis.
Length of a thesis statement
Generally a thesis statement is one or two sentences, but sometimes it can be as long as a paragraph.
Where should a thesis statement appear?
A thesis statement belongs in the introductory paragrah of an essay, usually at the end.
How to write a thesis statement:
Think about your essay topic and what you intend to write about. Remember your thesis statement must be an arguement, opinion, or analysis. And it should be as specific as possible. When someone reads your thesis statement, he/she should know exactly what your essay is going to be about.
Example:
Topic: School uniforms: for or against?
Weak thesis statemet: School uniforms should be banned for all grades.
Strong thesis statement:School uniforms should not be a necessity for all classrooms because they take away from a student's individuality, may not be affordable for all students and allow strangers to know a student's school information.
The difference between the two statements is the 'weak' thesis statement provides an ambiguous stance on school uniforms while the 'strong' thesis statement declares one's stance and the reasons for the stance.
Tip:
Thesis statements are best to write before starting your essay because it can help you organize your paper. However, if you are having a difficult time, wait until the end to compose your thesis statement! You may have a better idea of your arguement/opinion/analysis once you've completed the majority of your essay.
